The probably oldest preserved town house in Eisenach
The Hellgrevenhof, located at the former Georgentor of the Eisenach city wall, is the oldest preserved town house in Eisenach. It once belonged to the prestigious Hellgreve family, whose traditional relationship with Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia is significant
Legend has it that Master Klingsor stayed here when he came to Eisenach in connection with the singing competition. The master is said to have looked up at the stars and foreseen the birth of Elisabeth, who was later canonized. This is how it happened: Elisabeth was born in 1207 as the Hungarian king's daughter and was brought to Wartburg Castle at the age of four. On her arrival, she and her magnificent retinue first took up quarters in Hellgrevenhof.
