At the foot of the Wartburg: the Thuringian Museum “Reuter-Wagner Villa”
Built in 1866, the villa at the foot of the Wartburg makes it possible to experience 19th century bourgeois living culture thanks to the largely preserved furnishings of the living rooms of the Lower German poet Fritz Reuter. Since 1897, the magnificent villa has also housed the largest Wagner collection outside of Bayreuth.
This is where the Lower German poet Fritz Reuter and his wife Luise spent their old age. Since 1897, the Richard Wagner collection of Nicolaus Oesterlein has been presented in the villa. The passionate Wagnerian collected everything related to the "master" and his works. From letters, posters, newspaper articles and photographs to original scores, the collection comprises over 20,000 objects. At the centre of the collection is the library with more than 5000 volumes.
